No, the purpose of the law has nothing to do with deameaning King Juan Carlos, but to abolished all titles granted by Franco or King Juan Carlos to personalities linked to the Franco's regime. After Franco's death, King Juan Carlos ennobled relevant people during the former regime (former PM, former President of the Cortes and a couple more, including his widow and daughter).
But as I have explained, not all titles between 1975 and 1978 will be ablolished. The same with Franco's tites. Those given to businessmen or scientifics will be preserved.
To continue to use them socially ? Why not. I think the use of titles not legally recognised ceased to be a crime many years ago. And, in Spain, titles do not appear in legal documents.
The main problem is the the Popular Party has promised to repeal the law if it comes to power at the end of next year. Will then those titles be restored again? Good question.
Forgive me if this has been discussed before (if it has been I missed it). Is the purpose of the new legislation to demean the former king, suggesting that his enoblements were, somehow, not valid/reasonable?
My second question: is it likely, Manuel, that after the titles have been legally abolished, they will continue to be used and recognised socially?
