The reason for my asking is that while it has always been a requirement for a new pope to be elected BY the sacred college of cardinals, it hasn't always been a requirement that the said pope be FROM it. But of course, most persons elected to the papacy have indeed been former cardinals ...
Anyhow, I was focusing on the exceptions -- specifically, underaged persons. I once asked a friend whether it would have been possible to elect a BOY as pope. He said "sure, it's been done" (he thinks the youngest pontiff was only 15 years old).
