It seems that the breakdown of Maria II's 11 children was 7 sons and 4 daughters, with 2 sons dying in infancy and 1 more dying later in childhood. Similarly, 2 daughters died in infancy. This meant that only 4 sons survived to adulthood -- and they didn't all marry and have children of their own. As it was, the queen's sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons occupied the Portuguese throne until the monarchy was abolished (1910). I took a look at the genealogy, and it seems that her dynastic lines through her sons died with the exiled and deposed King Manoel II.
Are there any additional descendants, then, other than through Infanta Maria Ana and Infanta Antonia? Certainly nobody expected the Portuguese royal dynasty to fall into their lines, during their lifetimes, since they had so many brothers. As it was, their descendants got excluded from the succession because of their status as foreign royals. Interestingly enough, nobody expected Infanta Maria Ana's family to eventually sit on the throne of Saxony, since her husband (born Prince Georg) was only a second son, and hence the spare (not heir) in the succession. Indeed, he had an older brother who reigned as King Anton Albrecht, and nobody expected his marriage to Princess Carola of Sweden to be childless ...
