Thank you for checking, José!
Embarrassing for me on two accounts:
1. I have had Howe's book for years and if I ever read those passages, I had completely forgotten!
2. I lived my whole life in Rhode Island until retirement in early 2017, viewed Anita's estate there (Malbone House) and also visited her grave in the churchyard of St. Columba's Episcopal Church. As her main residence was in New York City, I had not considered that she might have dealt with the citizenship issue while summering in Newport, as many wealthy New Yorkers did (and still do).
Again, thank you!
You are welcome.
It was a lucky shot to look up on Howe's book.
There is not much information available on Anita in Portugal as her role in the portuguese history was very scarce.
We know of her extreme wealth and the fact that she helped funding the monarchic expeditions against the republic installed in 1910.
The republican press even undermined the Duke of Viseu's wedding saying he was marrying Anita's fortune, not the woman.
Others claimed it was Anita's mother who wanted to "buy" a throne for her daughter so she did not spending a few bucks on the monarchic cause.
BTW if someone knows how D.Miguel and Anita met, I would like to know.
Nevada Hayes, the Duchess of Oporto, wife of Infante D.Afonso Henriques has deserved some interest lately in 2 books : "A Americana que queria ser Rainha de Portugal" (The American who wanted to be Queen of Portugal) and "O Principe Piloto" (The Racing Prince) this one focused on Infante D.Afonso.
Maybe Anita would deserve some attention in the future.
The Wikipedia article - which you may have read - claims that, after having renounced to her princely and ducal titles, on social circles, Anita remained treated as the Duchess of Viseu.
If you still live in Rhode Island, maybe you can do some research on the Court files - don't know if such ancient documents would be on line.
Keep us informed
