Thank you, Johan. This helps me understand the situation better. I imagine it will be hard to sustain interest in the dynasty having the quasi-official role it enjoys at present if the "what comes after Elena" issue is not settled satisfactorily. It is hard to see any real alternative to Prince Nicholas.
Margarita's heiress is her sister princess Elena, that has not changed. the issue is after Elena. Nicholas is her oldest child and is the only one of Michael's grandchildren who has taken an interest in the country. He and his wife have made their home there. His sister nominally the second in the current line of succession to the custodian of the crown has not shown any public interest in a Royal role in Romania. With princess Irina and her children already booted out only princess Sophie and her daughter remain but neither one of them resides in Romania. Princess Maria has taken on an active role but has no children even though her marriage lasted 20 years before she got divorced and at almost 54 years of age it's unlikely she'll have any offspring.
With all this official activity, and recognition of her title by the Romanian Government, are there any official plans for a succession to this position as Custodian of the Crown? Presumably not nephew Prince Nicholas...
In the Court Circular from this past Wednesday, May 30, 2018:
The Prince of Wales was received this afternoon by The President of Romania at Cotroceni Palace, Bucharest, Romania.
His Royal Highness afterwards called upon Mrs. Viorica Dancila (Prime Minister of Romania) at Victoria Palace.
The Prince of Wales this evening called upon Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Crown of Romania at Elisabeta Palace.

She certainly stopped curtsying to Kings and Queens.
Curiously the Duchess of Cambridge curtseyed to her during Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee - but it was certainly a mistake (Mette-Marit has also curtseyed to Victoria of Sweden).
Has she met the Queen in the UK after King Michael's died? In which event was she styled Her Majesty in the Court Circular?
It will be interesting to see if Princesses and Infantas curtsey to her.
I was interested to see she was also styled "Her Majesty" in the British Court Circular.
It's great to see the Romanian RF acting as a quasi-reigning one.
Heartbreaking to see King Juan Carlos (and King Constantine for that matter) in wheelchairs.
Margareta of Romania and her husband have been invited by the King to a luncheon at Zarzuela. The couple have been in Spain attending some cultural events.
The Royal House has styled the couple Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Crown of Romania and His Royal Highness Prince Radu of Romania.
King Juan Carlos, posing on a wheelchair, and Queen Sofia were also present.
King Felipe and Margareta are second cousins.
