: According to a book about the Count of
: Barcelona which includes several interviews,
: he explains the story between King Baudouin
: and Infanta Pilar. Certainly the match was
: contemplated and, according to Don Juan, it
: was "that stupid Rethy" who
: boycotted it. Apparently, she did not want
: to have a royal as the King's consort.
What possible business was it of the Princesse de Réthy? Surely King Baudouin did not look to her for any guidance in the matter of his marriage? I was given to understand that neither he nor any of his siblings was in any way close to her?
: Pilar attended the world expo in Brussell
: with her father and was often seen with the
: King. According to the CoB's interviewer,
: Pilar did not like him. But her father said:
: "she would be willing to sacrifice
: herself, as a well educated Infanta".
Well, I guess Pilar's willingness to "lie back and think of Spain" was quite admirable in a rather outdated way but it seems King Baudouin had the more sensible approach of wishing to follow his heart rather than just act out of duty. I daresay he probably saved both of them from years of unhappiness even if it meant ultimately sacrificing his desire for children of his own.
