The King received the Cuban minister of Foreign Affairs this morning, and the minister extended an official invitation. The Spanish minister of Foreign Affairs has announced that the King and the Prime Minister will travel to the island as soon as possible. (The King has trips planned to the UK in June, to Astana for the Expo also in June and to Morocco in the second half of the year. El País speculates with a trip to Cuba at the end of the year, at the latest before February 2018)
It's been noticed many times that King Juan Carlos was very disappointed Cuba was the only Latin American country he couldn't visit officially during his reign. He attended an Ibero-American Summit in 1999 and after his abdication he represented Spain at Fidel Castro's funeral in 2016.
