I do not believe prison works and that it is for the most part a waste of money and talents. Of course for violent crimes, terrorism, etc, it is necessary - but almost everything is focused on the punishment and nothing on rehabilitation (some of the Scandinavian countries are more enlightened). In most of the world prison conditions (and the budgets allocated) do not give a prisoner the opportunity to give back to society in a meaningful way. They do not have proper exercise, the prisons are often dominated by gangs, and drugs are freely available. Prominent individuals like Inaki are very often subject to particular bullying. Most of the world still maintains a 19th century attitude when it comes to crime and punishment. There is often a particularly nasty celebratory attitude when someone prominent falls, and of course one must have sympathy because in these circumstances the attention this receives from the press is far greater than that given to more obscure people convicted of similar crimes. This ruins several lives, and will leave a life-long legacy to the couple's children. One then has to think how is this right? Have the actions for which he was convicted caused the kind of direct harm to any individuals that is now done to his children? I am not excusing what he did, but I just think 6 years in prison (even though he may only serve half that), coupled with financial ruin, is disproportionate. Is this really more of a deterrent to others than the financial ruin, entirely eliminating and more any gains he might have made from what he is convicted of doing? One should also remember that this was able to happen because of a wider corruption and poor government administration within the whole system of local government. Society should consider whether this produces a net gain or just leaves ruin in its wake.
: Not just Guy - we all do it / think it.
: Myself included.
