The whole political class was at Jerónimos Monastery for the wedding. Of course, then President Soares and his wife were the main guests.
The late President was a staunch republican though his presidency was always one of a great splendour for socialist and republican standards. All the banquets he hosted for royal heads of State were white-tie ceremonies and he had indeed many occasions to mingle with royalty especially the Spanish Royal Family. One of the few occasions Queen Sofía wore a tiara for a State Banquet in a republican country was for the banquet President Soares hosted for the Spanish royal couple in Lisbon, in 1986 (if my memory serves me well).
I also believe one of the few banquets the whole Spanish Royal Family attended (the Count of Barcelona and his daughters & sons-in-law included) was the one King Juan Carlos hosted in Soares's honour (the only other occasion I can think of Don Juan attending a State Banquet was of course the one for his cousin Queen Elizabeth II).
President Soares also represented Portugal at the Count of Barcelona's funeral.
