I try to understand where the claims of the carlists are based upon. Of course I understand the very beginning: in 1830 Don Fernando VII de Borbón, King of Spain, decided that no longer the Salic Law would be followed but that his daughter Dona Isabel de Borbón would be his successor.
Until then Don Carlos de Borbón, the King's brother, was the heir. A group in Spanish society did not accept the King's decision to end the Salic Law and fiercely opposed it. They united themselves in Carlists.
For so far so good. But when I would follow the Salic Law from Don Fernando VII to today:
A
Don Fernando VII de Borbón y Borbón-Parma, King of Spain (1784-1833)
No male issue, according Salic Law his eldest brother would be his Heir
B
Don Carlos de Borbón y Borbón-Parma, Conde de Molina (1788-1855)
Eldest brother of A
C
Don Carlos de Borbón y Braganza, Conde de Montemolín (1818-1861)
Eldest son of B
No issue, according Salic Law his eldest brother would be his Heir
D
Don Juan de Borbón y Braganza, Conde de Montizón (1822 - 1887)
Eldest brother of C
E
Don Carlos de Borbón y Austria-Este, 'Duque de Madrid' (1848-1909)
Eldest son of D
F
Don Jaime de Borbón y Borbón-Parma, 'Duque de Madrid' (1870-1931)
Eldest son of E
No issue and no brothers, according Salic Law his father's eldest brother would be his Heir
G
Don Alfonso Carlos de Borbón y Austria-Este, 'Duque de San Jaime' (1849-1936)
Eldest brother of E, uncle of F
No issue
With the death of Don Alfonso in 1936 the male descendants of the first Carlistic predentent Don Carlos de Borbón, Conde de Molina has become extinct. In my understanding the then most senior male descendant is.... King Alfonso XIII (1886-1941), the grandfather of the present King.
I understand that Don Alfonso appointed Don Xavier de Borbón-Parma y Braganza (1889-1977), the father of the present Duke of Parma, as his 'Heir' but I wonder what was the legitimation for that? Is it because of the unbroken male descendance to King Felipe V of Spain (1863-1746), the first Borbón King of Spain?
