I am very sorry to disappoint you Henri, but in the old days the entire Court was present at the birth of a prince/ princess.
Many higher nobles had the 'right of entrance' to the Queens Bedchamber, even when she was in the process of giving birth.
When you read the biography of many royal women, Queen Marie Antoinette, Empress Maria Teresa to name to examples, you will find out that their spouses were present at each and every birth.
The presence of the entire Court was established to prevent the 'baby-swapping'; a dead prince being quickly replaced by the child of a wet-nurse for example.
When this practice was abolished (luckily for all royal women), the practice, in The Netherlands, was established that a royal child has to be presented to the PM and vice-chairman of the Council of State.
As for fathers being present at birth..no the pain won't be less, but that does not mean that some support is very welcome for most women.
If I was in pain when I was young, my mother used to kiss my sour finger, knee, head or whatever. Did the pain go away as a result of the kiss? No of course not, but some support and understanding always works mirracles. I hope you will find out in time.

: I don't think that the attendance of the
: husband has any influence on the pain which
: is connected by birth. Asked to the mothers
: I know, how the delivery was, the most heard
: response was that it was hard work indeed,
: but that the pain is totally overshadowed
: with joy.
:
: I don't think it is too bad to see your
: spouse after she has given birth. She has
: had time to recuperate, the bed is provided
: with clean sheets, she is freshed up, the
: hair combed, the baby has been examined by
: the baker, dressed up and when she is ready,
: I can come an show my immense joy.
:
: That is not so strange at all. Our orthodox,
: jewish, hindu, islamic, buddhistic fellow
: citizens do not know better. Also in royal
: circles this was usance:
:
: (knock knock)
:
: "Entrez! Ach, the doctor!"
:
: "May I congratulate Your Majesty? It is
: a young Prince."
:
: "That is terrific news! Deo Gratias! Is
: the Queen ready to receive me?"
:
: "Her Majesty is ready to receive her
: King and Master."
