Because males were the stronger sexe, they had were the knights and warlords and officiers in their Sovereign's armed forces.
Later males became influential as dazzlig rich merchants, as regents in cities, as meritorious servants to the King and were ennobled.
Since WWII, maybe even better said: since the 1960's the equality of men and women have become an issue. Up until in the 1970's a woman marrying a husband was "wilsonbekwaam" (she needs her husband's permission to open a bank acount, that sort of things).
But having baronesses, marchionesses and duchesses fladdering round in diademes is already an anachronism and a relict of the past. I see no sense to 'modernize' an anachronism. Take it as it always has been. Or abolish it.
