Her infamous son Felix (one of the assassins of Rasputin) claimed, in his memoirs, that his mother was a much sought-after bride on the marriage market. That, in and of itself, should have been no surprise, given her wealth and beauty. But he asserted that she even had numerous ROYAL suitors -- a surprising fact, given that marital standards in the reigning European dynasties had become very high by the 19th century. Most families enforced the principle of Ebenbürtigkeit, whether or not it was official in their house laws. But Zinaida clearly did not meet this standard ("equally born"). Just who among the princes from reigning European dynasties, if anybody, sought her hand in marriage? I would imagine that some princes from MEDIATIZED houses might conceivably have been able to dynastically wed her. But sovereign houses?
