what led to the murder/execution of not only Nicholas and Alexandra but of their 5 children as well.
To my mind, nobody was. The book Former People well illustrated the massive volcano of resentment that had been building for generations among the miserable Russian under-classes living at the best of times at subsistence level. What was finally unleashed against the Tsarist system and the social classes who thrived within it was long overdue, even had Nicholas & Alexandra never existed. The upper-class myth of the loyal, god-fearing Tsar-loving Russian masses was doomed to explode no matter who was at the top.
