You are absolutely correct and its imposition in 1908 without any previous reason to suppose any such rule existed, after the heir had already been betrothed to his future wife was beyond the powers of his mother, the Princess Imperial who had no such authority. But the tenuous claim of the junior branch depends on this fiction so I suppose the young mn has been persuaded of its worth.
