In was surprised by this as well.
One of my uncles, a former Dutch ambassador, was simply appalled when he heard about the seating arrangements. His exact words (although I translate them for you): "A royal wedding isn't the bl**dy Olympics".

: Which was why it was particularly surprising
: that at the Cambridge wedding, the protocol
: apparently put former monarchs and their
: families in alphabetical order - with King
: Simeon sitting in front of King Michael.
: Also junior members of royal families were
: seated with the heads of their family, so
: the seating went by family group. It is hard
: to believe this was a deliberate change of
: policy but equally difficult to believe that
: the ceremonial staff are so ignorant as to
: have made such an extraordinary error.

: Yes, discussed before and more than once,
: but
: always a pleasure to explain it. Monarchs
: rank accroding to the length of the reign
: and former monarchs follow it, too. So,
: former reigning monarchs rank not according
: to the year they lost their throne, but to
: the year they succeeded to it. So, the rank
: of former monarchs is Michael of Romania,
: Simeon of Bulgaria and Constantine of
: Greece. You can check it at Spanish royal
: ceremonies, weddings and funerals. They are
: always seated after reigning monarchs,
: consorts of reigning monarchs and former
: royal consorts (eg, the Queen of Denmark and
: the Prince of the Netherlands at the funeral
: of the Count of Barcelona).
: Heads of non-reigning royal houses rank
: according to the date they became head of
: the Royal House.

: With official gatherings, the King or Queen
: with the longest reign has the highest
: precedence, but what with members of former
: royal houses, especially those where the
: last reigning monarch has died already?
:
: Is the order of precedence established based
: on the age of the House, or on the 'reign'
: of the Head of the Family?
: So in case of Bavaria and Wurttemberg, would
: Duke Carl have higher precedence than Duke
: Franz?
:
: And what about the former reigning monarchs?
: Does King Constantine of Greece has a higher
: precedence than King Simeon of Bulgaria
: because he lost his throne later?
:
: Perhaps this has been discussed before, but
: I missed it or forgot (the older one gets
: ). Thanks for any answers.
