Technically Nicholas' father was King-in-exile under the Regency of Queen Milena from 7 March 1921 until 13 July 1922, when the Conference of Ambassadors in Paris recognized the incorporation of Montenegro with the new state Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. King Nikola, driven into exile by the Entente during the war, established a government-in-exile and died in France on 1 March 1921 and his son renounced on 7 March, leaving the crown to Nikola's grandson, Prince Michael. Until 13 July 1922, the Kingdom of Montenegro was an internationally recognized entity, with the royal family maintaining a government-in-exile.

: Montenegro: Nicolas is not the crown prince of
: Montenegro because his father was never
: king. He is "the prince" of
: Montenegro. What a ridiculous title for a
: pretender who was never crown prince.
