The Duchy of Oldenburg was formed by the unification of the County of Oldenburg with the Bishopric of Lübeck. Friedrich August, Bishop of Lübeck, acquired Oldenburg and Delmenhorst from Russia (which had received them from Denmark in exchange for Holstein-Gottorp), and the combined territories became the Duchy of Oldenburg.
