It has more to with the fact that it was taklen away between 1945-1949. According to the laws passed before the Unitiy in 1990 place/propertytaken away during this time don't have to given back.
And as many other Families (like the saxon Royals) the Hohenzollern had the bad luck that all/most of their property was in the east-part of Germany which was occupied by the Sowjets.
