yesterday the TV station 3sat broadcasted - within a series about Prussia - a part on the present members of the Hohenzollern family: the head of the house, his uncle Friedrich Wilhelm, the Princesses Felicitas and Christina of Prussia and Prince Oscar of Prussia appeared. It was pretty interesting:
Prince Georg Friedrich comes across as a VERY grounded, intelligent and charming man, he looks a wee bit old for his age, but the his pretty modern in his approach and combines very much the demands of tradition and modernity. A very nice sign of this was hoy he greeted the Princesses - kiss on the cheeks as a close relative, followed by a bais main in respect of age and rang. In short he is a chap one has to like.
His uncle however is a different story. One feels how disappointed and bitter he is that due to his unequal marriages he lost his place and the position as head of the house.
Prince Oscar is again a totally different story -head of the Johanniter he engages actively in social welfare, a modern man and very engaging. The Princesses are funny as they are so different, even tough sisters - Princess Christina - a very elegant woman and a bit more conciliatory than her sister. Princess Felicistas - a wee bit the "groomy old woman", pretty opinionated, but funny too. She said she could have been the head of the house as she is the eldest granddaughter of the last Emperor, if her father's marriages would have been recognized...
Georg Friedrich indicated that parts of the house law might be changed. He did not say anything about marriages, except he would only marry for love. But I got the impression that he hopes that marriage and the house law might not contradict. Personally I believe an equal marriage would help him as otherwise all the conflicts would break out again with full force; after such a marriage it would be the time to modernize the house law ... he is intelligent enough to find the right way.

: The courts ruled that the Head of the family

: no that is not the ruling. The ruling has
: nothing to do at all with the question of
: the headship.
:
: Germany isa republic since 1918 and the
: German courts do not deal with such matters
: as succession. The popular press turns it
: into such a matter.
:
: It has all to do with the finances and who

: I think the ruling was that the head is free
: to select his heir, so there is no legal
: requirement for GF to marry equal. However
: his grandfather selected him as his heir
: based on the marriages of his father and
: uncles so if he were to change that system
: he might be considered a hypocrite. He would
: have to resign as head and either let the
: headship of the family pass to his father's
: younger brother (the next in line with equal
: marriages) or to the oldest male line of
: Wilhelm II.
: But as he is said to date a princess so he
: seems to be able to follow his heart and
: keep the within the requirements of the will
: of Wilhelm II.

: I had read that the original Will
: stipulating
: that the head of the house must marry
: equally was more of a financial arrangement
: than designating who the head of the house
: is (something the German courts have no
: jurisdiction over). Although Georg Friedrich
: is recognized as head of the house, I
: remember reading that the stipulation that
: the inheritor of the estate be married
: equally could only be ordered for a few
: generations and that Georg Friedrich will be
: able to marry whomever he chooses without
: violating the Will. I may be wrong but that
: is what I remember.

: His entire status as head of the family is
: the
: result of the equal/acceptable marriage of
: his parents and the fact that his father's
: elder brother married a commoner so i guess
: he needs to marry a woman of royal or noble
: descent.

: The Prussian Royal and Imperial families has
: always been one of my favorites to read and
: learn about. I haven't heard too much lately
: about the head of the house Prince Georg
: Friedrich. Does anyone have any current news
: or information on him? I thought I remember
: hearing he was dating someone that was from
: an aristocratic family but I'm not sure
: about that. Is he still under pressure to
: marry someone of equal or acceptable status?
