all dynasts of the Russian imperial house were generally born to DYNASTS of the imperial house - but only a surprisingly low number of them were actually /porphyrogenite/, i.e born to a reigning parent.
Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich was born as the youngest child to his father, Tsar Paul, in 1798.
Grand Duke Michael 'porphyrogennetos', who died in 1849,

married his first cousin once removed, Elena Pavlovna, whose father had himself been born in Petersburg. Only one of their children (duchess of Mecklenburg as married) managed to have surviving issue.
Michael was the only of his father's horde of eleven legitimate children to be born in purple.
Grand Duchess Elisaveta Alexandrovna was born in 1806 to her reigning father, Tsar Alexander I. The young Elisabeth deceased in 1808.

of the surviving children of Tsar Nicholas I,
only three were born when he was reigning:
Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaievich, born in 1827, died (as is said, too early) in 1892

married his second cousin twice over, Alexandra Ossipovna of Altenburg, one of the matrilineal descendants of Empress Euphrosyne Doukaina Kamatera (the high-medieval greek autocratess whose power was destroyed by western crusaders who besieged her Constantinople)
and had several children, several of whom have progeny to the present day.
Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaievich, born in 1831, survived only to 1891 and predeceased even his elder brother

married his first cousin once removed, the Russia-born Alexandra Petrovna of Oldenburg, great-granddaughter of Tsar Paul, and had two legitimate sons, one of whom has progeny to our days
Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaievich, born in 1832
lived until the year 1909

having married Olga Fedorovna of Baden, granddaughter of the last Swedish grand duke of Finland.
several of their children have progeny to the present day.
Only the youngest two of the legitimate children of Tsar Alexander II were born during his reign:
Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, born in 1857, and assassinated in 1905

married his first cousin once removed, the sainted Elisaveta Fedorovna of Hesse and Rhine
and they did not have children.
Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich, born in 1860 and murdered by bolsheviks in 1919

married firstly and fully equally, his first cousin once removed, Alexandra Georgievna of Greece, daughter of the king of the orthodox Greece and great-granddaughter of Tsar Nicholas I, via his second son grand-duke Konstantin 'porphyrogennetos', as well as one of the matrilineal descendants of the high-medieval Empress Euphrosyne Doukaina Kamatera.
Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna, youngest child of Tsar Alexander III, was born during his reign in 1882, and deceased in exile in 1860

She married firstly, her second cousin, the Russia-born duke Peter Alexandrovich of Oldenburg, had no children and they divorced
She married secondly, the lowly-born colonel Nicholas Kulikovski, and had two sons who left progeny to the present day
All five children of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Fedorovna were born during their father's reign - and each and every of them were murdered by bolsheviks in 1918 still unmarried:
Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaievna, born in 1895

Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaievna, born in 1901

the Tsarevich, Grand Duke Alexei Nikolaievich the Hemophiliac, 'Alexis porphyrogennetos', born in 1904

-------------
a common thing with these porphyrogenite is that none of them ascended the actual throne to reign.
In medieval times, a porphyrogenite son would have been preferred in succession, over sons born when their parent was not yet regnant
Nicholas II was not porphyrogennetos
Alexander III was not porphyrogennetos
Alexander II was not porphyrogennetos
Nicholas I was not porphyrogennetos
Tsar Paul was not porphyrogennetos
Peter III was not porphyrogennetos
Empress Elisabeth was a porphyrogenneta (being born when her father Peter i reigned), but yet outside marriage = illegitimate
