Five centuries ago, the monarch of that country still ascertainedly was fluent in the celtic language of Gaelic:
in 1499 the Spanish envoy Pedro de Ayala reported that king James IV was able to "speak Latin, French, German, Flemish, Italian and the barbarian Gaelic, the native tongue of nearly all his subjects".
It is pretty clear that for example the 1700s monarchs of great Britain did not speak Gaelic - some of them had difficulties in speaking even English, as they were native Hanoverians...
But, later royals have successfully got to master the english language.
Has any recent or current royal, been able to understand and speak Gaelic ?
