The media joke based Daniel's 'right to claim' on DNA, which was alleged to show that he *descends* from the Folkunge dynasty.
However, it should be underlinbed that no DNA test (over lineage which spans for several centuries) actually affirms a direct descent. Nope.
It affirms the same chromosome, Y chromosome (if it is question if unbroken male line). And the same y DNA actually MORE OFTEN is between collateral agnates, than in direct descent. And this is well-known among people who are genetical genealogists [but, conceivably, there could exist plenty of genealogists who do not know genetics properly]. So, IF Daniel had the same of very similar Y DNA as the corpse of Birger jarl, then this actually rather would show that Daniel would more likely descend directly from some sort of agnatic cousin of Birger jarl, rather than show any DIRECT descent from Birger jarl.
Well, Birger jarl's agnatic cousins (particularly, remoter such cousins) might well have been Swedish farmers of of that epoch....
And, naturally, such wouold not imply any royal heritage as itself.
