Currently reading Gyles Brandreth - Philip and Elizabeth: Portrait of a Marriage http://www.randomhouse.co.uk/catalog/book.htm?command=Search&db=main.txt&eqisbndata=0099446731.
Not normally the sort of book I would read.
The reviews for the book seem quite mixed, Robert Lacey said it was "insightful portrait of Prince Philip written to date" others were less complementary. Who am I to argue with Robert Lacey?
I'm quite enjoying the book and found it quite easy going and difficult to put down. Gyles is quite good at name dropping, and how much close access he had to Prince Philip. The snippets which he then inserts in the book would make me less inclined to be Gyles "friend" if I were Prince Philip.
In the prologue to the book Gyles did say he liked footnotes but would try to moderate their use in the book as some readers find them obtrusive. I think he found it difficult not to include footnotes as some of them occupy almost half a page.

: It has been some time since the last book
: corner at the ERMB. So I just wonder - what
: are you reading now? (Has to be
: royalty-related).
:
: I haven't read much "royal
: literature" lately, other than the
: latest issue of Royalty Digest Quarterly,
: which reached my home at Oppsal in Oslo last
: week.
:
: But I have bought 2 "new" royal
: books.

:
: 2009 is full of anniversaries - for instance
: Abraham Lincoln, Knut Hamsun and more
: relevant to this board - it is 200 years
: since King Gustaf IV Adolf was dethroned.
:
: Yesterday I bought one of two new books on
: King Gustaf Adolf - Mats Wickman's En
: kunglig tragedi – en biografi om Gustaf IV
: Adolf , Stockholm: Fischer & Co., 2009.
: ISBN: 978-91-85183-62-3. 233 p.
:
: I also bought - finally! - Tor
: Bomann-Larsen's fourth biography about King
: Haakon VII and Queen Maud. Don't know why I
: haven't bought it earlier. Had hoped to get
: it for Christmas 2008, but received other
: nice gifts instead.
:
: In addition, I also bought a guidebook about
: Montenegro and Bosnia-Hercegovina, as this
: summer trip goes to Balkan. Not too
: relevant, but Montenegro was after all a
: former monarchy, and I hope to visit Cetinje
: and the royal palace and graves. I believe
: there was an article about this in Royalty
: Digest Quarterly some time ago - could
: someone help me with the reference? Thanks
: in advance.
:
: So, what about you - what are your latest
: additions to your royal library, and what
: are you currently reading?
