I think the legal situation would be that under lack of eligible heirs, a Regency would be prescribed, and the 'normal' way would be to elect the next monarch and dynasty.
That's what happened earlier: the Bernadotte election was just that.... the adoption was not important, and it took place only after the election.
but, of course, if a monarchy is getting vacant and an election is needed, that 'normal' progress would easily be disrupted by changes of constitution, which could lead to republic.....
The election of the next monarch is always such big a thing that the same organs of state would also consider (and try legislate) other options.
