: I am curious about where it goes after
: Ultimatium.I cannot bring myself to buy ANY
: of the current titles
meh...imo, the ultimate line has been in decline for a while...between delays and decaying story quality and marvel's own seeming lack of interest, i don't see much hope.
i was thrilled when they started uff, since that was my favorite mainline as a child. at the time, i wasn't digging mark waid's stuff *at all* and the fresh take really appealed to me. between bendis and ellis, i got hooked.
but then millar took it over, made it flash-bang and cartoony and the pseudo-science, not to mention non-stop bad logic, was awful...
i liked millar's ultimates at first, but halfway thru vol 2 i got exasperated with the delays and it seems that he even lost track of his storyline, as a suspenseful storyline became one deus ex machina after another (hawkeye suddenly having lightning-speed fingernails, and then taking down a room full of soldiers off-panel, in the dark, because he's, uh, quicksilver pt 2? the liberators not caring about the wasp or that cap is missing...? etc). on top of that, his tendency to have everyone except nick fury and cap talk like valley girls and disaffected grunge kids got to me.
the galactus crossover started nicely but even that finished off with a whimper--i noticed it went from 6 iss to 5 two-thirds of the way thru, and once again rush-storytelling was in evidence.
even still, i stuck with several ultimates titles, and thought: ultimate power? okay! supreme power wasn't *amazing*, but this could go places. quality declined with each author (not to say i'm a devotee of bendis's--all *his* characters talk like snarky teens), culminating in loeb--
ugh, loeb--when i saw that he was writing ultimatum, i realized marvel was fully committed to killing this line. imo they hired him to put the final nails in the coffin.
: I cant think of anything that would
: change my mind, even the possibility of a
: reboot
i dunno, how do you reboot a reimagining? i think they lost their way with this whole line, and to me it's a one-shot deal. i guess they are carrying forward with some stuff, but to me it's going to become one more case of chronic 'issue one.'
: will there be a "down the
: road" for the U.U.?
i think the ultimate line was part of the comics renaissance that came after the glut, the falls, the bankruptcy and lost appeal...it arose in the era of strong stories and strong characterization, cause cape of the week was not cutting it at the time.
for whatever reason, cape of the week, lame mass-crossovers, and other sales gimmicks have once again become the status quo. what was making comics good isn't as much of a priority for their creators, it seems, and thus my enthusiasm has waned to where i rarely even cop a read in the store anymore.
does it have a future? maybe i'll investigate that in ten more years.
