The way it SHOULD be.
Please, constructive criticism only. Unkind comments hurt just about anyone.
This is not intended to be art. This one especially is not intended to be. I got through high school and two undergraduate degrees writing one draft and handing it in. I don't think any teacher of mine ever knew. I know no other student ever knew.
But in all my life, I've STUNK at writing fiction. And so you have it.

####. Ouch.
Damn it.
Okay. I’m the starting point guard of the Indiana Blaze. If you don’t know anything about basketball, that means I’m the fastest player on the team and handle the ball, dribbling it so that the other team can’t steal it and passing it to the other four players so they can score.
Now that you’ve had that intro, I’ll tell you the rest of it. I’m the best point guard, the best player, in the game. I’m 6’2”, 200 lbs. I get to the rim and either dunk or throw to the perimeter guys for the 3.
I do not do this by slithering sideways and hoping for the best. I take my first step, establish the lane, and if anyone gets in my way, he’ll probably go through the hoop before the ball does.
I’m quick enough that I started the NBA’s first 5-point play. I got to the hoop and threw the ball out to the hot shooter and got fouled just as he released the ball. Simultaneously. It’s always been either/or. Even the camera could not make up its mind. So he gets the trey and I get two shots from the line.
I’m the starting point guard, I’d be the star player on any team.
Until a few weeks ago.
My back started to hurt. This was not soreness or fatigue. This was like a needle being jabbed into my back, with hot lights going into my eyes and I can’t believe this and a scream and I’m on the floor.
Yeah, I know, but this was while I was standing in the shower. Statistics have shown that the last place a pro basketball player is likely to get nailed in the back and sent to the floor is when he’s standing alone in the shower. Okay, I just made that up. But the rest of it . . . I could not believe it. I’ve torn and broken stuff before and there was never anything like this.
My younger daughter had to help me get out of the shower and dress. She’s 3. I’ve been dressing myself for quite a long time and I pretty much have it down.
Only I was standing in the shower and fireworks were going off in my mind and I could not lift either foot off the floor, not even enough to slide along the matt. Forget taking an actual step.
