Ultimate X-Men #89 Review
Finally, an Ultimate X-Men tale worth telling.
by Bryan Joel
December 19, 2007 - Welcome to another IGN Comics review. If you've been here before, you know the drill. If you haven't, here's how it works. We grade on a 100-point scale. Numerically this is represented as a 10 point system with 0.1 increments. These scores also translate to particular labels. To learn more about our rating system, look for the red link near our final score at the bottom. For trade, arcs and manga reviews, we'll comment on art and writing along with a final score. Weekly books get a faster treatment due to their shorter length.
One thing to keep in mind is we're providing you with multiple reviews and multiple scores. To keep things simple (for you and for us), we're limiting this to one Additional Take. The Additional Take reviewer will have his or her score listed directly after their opinion. The Final Score is not affected by this and is directly determined by the Main Reviewer (who is listed in the article's byline).
Any time you feel like commenting on our reviews, you may. Our weekly review index, which is published late Wednesday night, has a comment section. Every review we publish does as well (look below). You can also find our message boards by clicking the link on the left-hand side. Enjoy!

Ultimate X-Men welcomes new penciller Salvador Larroca with Storm spotlight issue that's worlds better than the past year on the book, mostly because it actually works.
This issue introduces the Ultimate Shadow King, a character that's been hinted at in the book in relation to Storm. Here, Kirkman delves into her past with Farouk and how this incarnation of the Shadow King came to be. For a change, Ultimate X-Men feels truly like an Ultimate title and makes use of its license to toy with its characters' histories. One of the more appealing aspects of Ultimate Storm when she first debuted was that she was not a very nice person. Her first appearance featured Jean Grey busting her out of jail. "Shadow King" runs with that and nicely juxtaposes how she started with the character she is now as part of Bishop's X-Men.
I criticized the last arc of Ultimate X-Men for jamming too many obscure old X-Men plots into one story and expecting them to work harmoniously. There are elements of that here, but they make much more sense. The Brood, previously seen as a Danger Room construct, make an appearance as part of Shadow King's powers, and it's all tied together with their first appearance in a frankly neat way. It also sidelines the Brood's status as an alien entity, a concept which I never liked in conjunction with the X-Men.
Salvador Larroca's art is as good as always, but I'm not sure I find him a great match to the book. It was only a month or two ago that he was on Uncanny X-Men and as a result, many of his Ultimate X-Men resemble their more adult counterparts in the Marvel Universe proper. Regardless, that's a nitpick and won't matter to readers who aren't familiar with Larroca's extensive X-Men work. All told, he'll probably turn out some great work for Ultimate X-Men if this issue and future cover solicitations are any indication.
A refreshingly good issue, then. And not a moment too soon, either. I was beginning to wonder if Ultimate X-Men had any good stories left to tell, and issue #89 came along and surprised me.
