I agree with a lot of what you said. I think the problem is that the first issue starts off somewhere in the middle with flashbacks meant to convey what has happened. Instead of going from a-b-c we start at b-c while being told what happened with a. That throws a lot of people off.
I admit to me the issue was a mixed bag. The backgrounds were too dark and while Loeb threw in a lot of plot points (probable to keep readers attention as they are resolved) I felt it was too many for one book. Espically since the whole thing is supposed to be four or five issues. I'll probable give it another issue. I just hope it doesn't suffer the delays.
One thing I have been wondering. Some people have complained that Ultimates was meant to be safe for children. Since when? Millar had the Hulk eating people, wife beatings, Hawkeye tearing his fingernails off, etc.
Also, another writer named Garth Ennis writes highly praised books that are supposed to make what Loeb did hear tame by comparison. So, why are those praised for their use of "adult themes" and Loeb is chastised for it?
