I think the problem was that it is not really an 'Ultimates' book anymore. Gone are the debates over agressive foreign policies, celerbrity superheroes, ect. It reads more like a more nastier version of the original Avengers, which is fine, but it really does feel like a different book. Plus I think he may have misinterpreted the relationships between the charcters, Cap & Hawk were soldiers and the rest were civilians so their approaches were different and caused a bit a characters conflict, but now they both just act OTT mean. Also Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch showed signs of snobery to the others as they were mutants and (as far as they knew), the rest of the team were only homo sapiens. But now Scarlet Witch was a flirt and Quicksilver was a border line psycho, wereas he used to just be a bit of a b###h to everyone.
Also the idea of Tony's alcoholism does not work in the Ultimate U. He is bladded from the moment he wakes up in the morning until he goes to sleep at night, happy or sad becuase it numbs the pain in his head from his tumor.
I thought it was unbelievable that within one year Hank Pym has been released from S.H.I.E.L.D, mad freinds with his ex again and been allowed back on the team (even if he was only filling in for Banner's role). Especially after he betrayed them all. One year after he had hurt Wasp he was still being pushed aside and eventually kicked of the team, so this seemed rushed.
Thor's voice and hammer have changed to Marvel Thor's, which is fine, but I liked that Ultimate Thor was more 'modern'.
The good points:
Black Panther looks great and for all we know there could a twist that he is not T'Challa in this Universe (Wasp even said that she does not know who he is). Valkyrie gaining powers can be interesting if they do it well. And I like Hawkeyes change in look, not as much as the onld one but it is fine. Does anyone know if Ultimate Bullseye has been introduced in any of the books yet, becuase I was wondering if they are setting up Hawkeye to become him (the target on the head thing). Plus he may have been the one who killed Wanda.
Last point. Was the doctor who tried to save Wanda at the end Ultimate Dr. Donald Blake?

: Just read the first of the 5-issue mini-series
: by Loeb and Mad.
:
: A LOT of people have been complaining about
: this and fan response online has been
: brutal. Unfortunately, it has also been a
: tad unfair. Don't get me wrong, I am not a
: big fan of Loeb's writing or Mad's art, but
: I gotta be fair here... it ain't that bad.
:
:
: THE GOOD
: - Black Panther doesn't talk. Adds a new
: element of intrigue.
: - The new Hawkeye with a deathwish is cool.
: - Makes sense for the professional
: superheroes to watch the Tony sex tape in a
: meeting.
: - I was afraid the art would be too
: anime-like, but it was very dynamic.
: - Coloring was top notch.
: - A lot of small storylines were introduced.
:
:
: THE BAD
: - The Venom surprise attack was stupid. He's
: in the building, then all of a sudden on the
: streets? It was kind of confusing.
: "Where is she? Where is she?" Give
: me a break.
: - Too many needless splash pages; it did not
: provide the impact splash pages are designed
: to make.
: - Valkyrie????
: - Everybody sounds the same. If you
: substituted the word balloons around, it
: would not have made a difference. I can't
: imagine every character being sarcastic and
: having a sense of humor. Very un-Ultimate
: like.
: - Black Panther was clearly underpowered
: against Venom, but I felt no sense of
: face-off against Venom. Might have been
: better to show a few panels of Panther going
: against a massively overpowered Venom to
: convey to the readers how he was against
: unbeatable odds.
: - Quicksilver trying to stop the bullet was
: confusing. Did the bullet fly around in
: circles? Not sure what was going on there.
: - A lot of small storylines were introduced.
:
:
: REBUTTAL TO UNFAIR ONLINE COMMENTS
: - Everybody hated Loeb's explicit direct
: mention of the incest. You know what? Millar
: introduced the whole concept in the first
: place. It was abound to come out at some
: point (just like Thor's true origin).
: - Why do people have issues against Hawkeye
: having a deathwish? It's natural for that to
: happen after what he's been through. It's
: happened to the Punisher and to Speedball.
: - Hawkeye's costume looks cool, not cheesy
: 90's-all-over-again like everyone has
: complained about. A change in character (and
: hence costume) is completely understandable.
: That's what Frank Castle did when he adorned
: the Punisher costume after his family's
: brutal murder.
: - The coloring is NOT confusing as people
: say. In fact, it's top notch. I've read a
: comment complaining how the inking sucked
: too. Come on! The coloring clearly separate
: the foreground from the background, and was
: very well done. Yes, Mad's panels are
: confusing as hell in many cases, but that
: has nothing to do with the coloring.
: - The Tony sex tape is not too graphic for
: an "M" rated comic.
:
:
: STORY: 7 out of 10 (as a regular comic
: book)
: 4 out of 10 (as an Ultimates book)
: ART: 7 out of 10
: OVERALL: 6 out of 10
