Posted by seeker on 8/3/2007, 2:16 pm, in reply to "Trades vs. Individual Issues --- your thoughts" Trades allow me to collect story arcs without having to spends months buying issues I don't want. Trades also sometimes include extras I find interesting. Finally, on miniseries or such where I am unsure if I will like the story I can wait for the trade or if the publishing schedule is erratic. (I don't usually mind waiting between issues, but when I build up my anticipation and the schedule is erratic not only does it seem unprofessional, but I loose interest as well and move on to something else.) But if I think I will like it and can afford it I pick up the individual issues when I can. I don't really buy comics for their monetary value. For instance the series Hack/Slash I heard about it and it sounded interesting. I looked for the individual issues and my early attempts did not fair well so I got the trades instead to see if I would like the series. Now I get the individual issues since I was inspired by the trades.

I like individual issues, but I cannot always afford to buy the issues I want. In the past when I have tried to collect issues I would use ebay and it was a pain to try and find the issues I was specifically looking for. Many of the ebay auctions seem to be random collections of issues from a single series and I would waste money on issues I wouldn't want. Even when I bought back issues at comic book stores they would only have some of the issues I was looking for.
