I tried to avoid reviews of this issue before writing my own, but I gave in. Luckily, the reviews haven't changed my opinion on the issue.
THE GOOD:
- The first few pages of Thor and Loki fighting is the most excellent portrayal I've seen of a hero trying and successfully escaping the grip of a reality bender. It was extremely well written (eg. Thor asking Loki why he's wet).
- The 8 page spread was an AMAZING piece of artwork. Incredible detail, proportions were correct, and the repeated Quicksilver was friggin' awesome. This COMPLETELY blows away Jim Lee's 6-page spread in All Star Batman.
- Quicksilver.
- Millar finally revealing how Loki made Captain America appear as the murderer of Hawkeye's family.
- As usual, Millar's dialogue is top notch and his characterizations are spot on.
- I liked the way Hank justified his position to Captain America after the battle; makes you want to believe him.
- Natasha's gungho attitude facing death. She knew it was coming and went out in style.
THE BAD:
- Despite my love of the 8-page spread, I would have rather had a 2-page spread with 6 additional pages of story.
- Hulk was underutilized. I would have loved seeing him stomp some orcs, or even those large horned creatures.
- The comeback battle was wrapped up too quick because it depicted a single point-in-time with that wasteful 8-page spread.
- What the heck is up with the last couple of pages of Steve Rogers in 1942? That completely lost me.
- The Avengers versus Lord of the Rings. Too much fantasy for me.
- No closure on how the public reacted to Hulk's return.
QUESTIONS I HAD READING THE ISSUE:
- How did Natasha flee Stark's men to end up in a hospital?
- Was Hawkeye, the sharpshooter, being sarcastic when he said he needed his glasses?
The ending of this series had the same tone of the ending of the original one, a cleanly wrapped up issue with Millar dedicating half the issue to talking heads. Overall, not the greatest issue of the series, but a good, clean closeout of the run.
3/10 (if you haven't read the series)
