Yes, Claremont made regular Magneto and Xavier former friends which was a bit of a major retcon.
The Ultimate versions started as friend but when Xavier realised that Maggy was becoming a loony fruit, he quit and was rewarded with a steel javeling thru his spine. So, it is not to surprising.
: I read a friend's early issues at the time but
: have Ultimate Prof and Magneto ever really
: been portrayed as anything like close?
: Magneto put Prof X in the wheelchair in this
: continuity after all, right?

: no idea but the final page in that book
: officially made me hate Ultimate x-men,
: magneto enjoying xaviers death!?!?!?! WTF
: people the thing i loved with magneto and
: xavier was they were friends on different
: sides of a war, it made them dynamic fun and
: interesting, i mean that was so out of
: magnetos character i almost tore the book in
: half when i read it.

: I still think the series needs a writer
: whose
: ideas for the book are a little more dynamic
: (not a more dynamic writer because elsewhere
: Kirkman is VERY dynamic. Just not here) but
: this is a great aftermath issue. The art is
: by Yanick Paquette, who I don't know if I've
: ever seen before, and his art is much better
: suited to the type of story being told than
: any other artist I've seen on the book since
: I started reading it. I'm just wondering
: why Kirkman's name is left off the creator
: credits on the cover when they list the
: artist, inker, and even colorist there.
