There are a couple of reasons why you don't see much in there about today's technology. First, I intentionally try to leave out specific pop culture references which would date the story. That's in order to leave the time period vague enough so as to allow the reader to use her own imagination in figuring out when it is happening. Secondly, if this were happening in today's technological climate, let's face it, the characters would be spending every minute of their time on their devices, texting and doing social media, and there would be no time left for any adventures.
So, let's just say, the story takes place at some undetermined time prior to the internet. Maybe a few years ago. Maybe a few centuries ago. And maybe both. Use your imagination! That's what makes for fun fantasy.
