I would like to set up a list of ideas for Christians who don't know how to help families of children with different types of disabilities. Can you help me get this out and growing? I want to be able to present these ideas at a Family Workshop I will be doing in May 2002. Please keep the ideas simple, maybe in a checklist form.
Topics:
1. Newborns with a diagnosis parents unexpected.
-a baby basket- what can go inside such a basket
-visit the newborn
-offer to baby-sit other children while baby is still at the hospital
-welcome home party for new baby
-set up meals
-connect them with another parent who has been there
-baby-sit for a date night for them
-offer a listening ear
-invite them to your house(help them escape from home?)
-please consider if your child is ill, do not expose their illness to the medically fragile child.
-offer a listening ear
-baby-sit their other children if child is in the hospital
-available anytime of night to take their other children should an unexpected hospital visit be needed.
-offer carpool- no strings attached

-stay with child while in the hospital to give mom or dad break
-set up a prayer chain
- in the winter months, offer to stay with the child at home while parents can go to church together.(prevent exposure to colds/flu/infections.)
-offer to take their teen shopping for their birthday gift for mom or dad.
-offer to take them out to the movies, park, video games
