I’ve finally gotten around to listening to Solo and I have a few thoughts.
-The performance of AP is absolutely amazing. I don’t know if it’s the audience participation or what but it definitely has something that just grabbed me. I’m not sure if this’ll make sense, but I love the way the last two choruses sound. The transition from Don singing quietly to the entire audience erupting gives me goose bumps. I can only imagine what it must like to experience that first hand.
-Solo does a great job of showcasing Don’s personality. I love him impersonating Johnny Cash on Lovesick Blues and the “washing machine” comment on Babylon.
-Speaking of Babylon, Don leading the audience in the song is definitely one of the highlights.
-It was awesome getting to hear a live version of Three Flights Up, which is becoming one of my favorite Don tracks. The way Don sings the last verse makes the message all the more powerful.
-The banjo playing is wonderful to listen to, it’s a shame Don doesn’t bring it out more.
-Overall, the album’s amazing. It definitely makes me long to see Don live even more (hopefully it’ll happen in Europe next year!), or at least get some more live recordings as all of the one’s I’ve heard are really good.
So, what does everyone else think of Solo?
