I must admit I couldn't have given you a definition of crackerjack and I have never heard it used in a normal sentence. If anything I would have thought it was a firework.
However, most British kids of a certain age if they hear the word feel a compunction to yell it out. Crackerjack on a Friday teatime was an institution - 'It's Friday night, it's five o'clock and it's Crackerjack'. When the show title was mentioned during the show the audience of kids always responded by yelling 'Crackerjack'
The other Don Maclean really came to the show after my time. Nowadays he has a radio show on Radio 2 on a Sunday morning and is generally involved in religious shows. That is why when you search for Don stuff it often appears he has done albums of hymns!
