I don't know much about police work with dogs. I do have, however, hunted my but-off on a horse with packs of dogos. I've seen them go not 10, but 30 miles.
However, I must say that the experience of Gendarmerķa Argentina (the equivalent to your Border Patrol) in the 80's with the dogo was that they had too much prey-dive oriented towards wild scents. They could track a man, until they scented a hog or a cougar, though. Then it was all over.
