It's a testament to the canine program rather than me or anything else. The dog was still going pretty strong after it was over. My partner was quitting, I was about done, too. That dog is still awesome, though older and probably getting to within a year or two of being put to pasture. If anyone up high had any sense, they'd breed him as soon as possible. His litter mates weren't anything close to him, but to be fair to them, this dog had been with pretty gung ho handlers in high traffic areas. He was a mean bastard when getting his toy away from him until I had to literally throw down with him and we both came out of it pretty messed up. After that, he'd show me his belly whenever I wanted. As far as him taking the heat, it's kind of funny. He was an all black groendendahl, Belgian shepherd, and he acted like the heat meant nothing to him and I never saw him scared but if he stepped on a burr he was a big baby. Dog booties were his best friend.
I still think certain dogos can perform as well based on everything I've seen and read, and I think the breed as a whole would be just as good or better in that type of work. It's only a matter of time until Americans completely screw up those European breeds or the imports will become unreasonably expensive and I believe dogos will be a good replacement. If I was a good breeder and had any contacts with departments that allow personally owned dogs, I'd be looking to get my name out there. No better hunting than the hunting of men, and dogos are bred to hunt.
