payne, I don't know if you like running, but if you do, it's a lot better for the dog. Bike riding has an inherent problem; the dog doesn't go at his pace, but at yours. It is not the distance, I have hunted 50 kms on a single day on horse and taken dogs what were under 12 months with me (soft terrain of course, not asphalt). The thing is, if they need to quit, they can and they do. We pick them up when we get back.
Having said all this, if you are only doing 1.5 miles at his pace, there's nothing to fear; he should be perfect.
