Howard,
I think that you said it well.If the purpose of the Dog(specific breed) is to WORK-then if it does NOT(cannot) WORK- the integrity of the breed is diminished.
The show ring has a way to focus on things which, sometimes, have no purpose at all.
It's amazing how much money is spent on showing...I got caught up in that with Samson-and I remember a Female judge(actually one in training) once commenting about a scar that he had on his neck-I explained where that had come from(a hog) and she made some derrogatory remark with reference to how that was unsuitable in the show ring(she should have gotten an education in Argentina).I think that some Judges do not follow standards, anyway, but merely look at being consistent with other judges(popularity of a certain dog-etc)when they are unsure, and what they think looks good.
Who gives a rat's arce what a dog look likes if it cannot do the job that it was created for?!?
140 pound mastiff headed dogos were winning back east for a while-and I rememeber the comparison to those Big muscle heads(Body builders) and functional (athletic)fighters-the looks are deceiving.
Function and then form- and I hate that bullshytt argument about "well if it doesn't have the athletic attributes"..etc etc. You can only see HEART,Function, ability,in one way-and that sure as hell ain't in a show ring.If you want to go back to that question about "looks" then you might consider that old "question": "Does form follow function or does function follow form".I think that anyone who has seen a Dogo-or any working breed-doing it's job, knows the true answer to that question
Regards
Aaron
