For years the AKC did not accept new breeds until they saw the success that rare breed shows were having. When they realized all of the revenue that they were losing they changed their mind. They still have an elitist attitude toward the breeds that they don't recognize, feeling they are poor in comparison to the breeds that they do. If you want to show your dogs then AKC recognition is probably just what you want. If you want your dog to work AKC recognition is exactly what you don't want.
