Last night on our walk we had a scary moment. It seemed like Mike had suddenly overheated-well it wasn't SUDDENLY-but it happened quickly on what was a normal walk for him-what would cause that?
I was about 1 mile from the car and I knew that if he collapsed we wouldn't make it back in time to get to a clinic.
I had a cell phone called Amy to email Marcelo to get some help-time consuming. But in an emergency-I would like to know how most people would handle this and different thoughts on this.
I found a shaded spot.I had an electrolyte tablet and gave him that and we gave him about 1.5 liters of water in a 15 minute period.I held him down and grabbed the water bladder from the knapsack that we where.I tried to keep him cool with this-it contains ice{melted by this time but still cool}-by rubbing his whole body..after about 20 minutes he was, almost, normal-still panting but it had slowed considerably.
But I KNOW that I was lucky...
What do most people do for Dogs that overheat?
and what about feeding before, are there any supplements that should be given before a hunt(etc) where the dog might be exposed to overheating?
I am referring to when/if you are in an area where you don't have access to a lot of water where the dog can be hosed down, dunked, or any other means-what if you are in a remote area etc etc
Any drugs that are given if a dog IS overheating? which can be packed? how much time before the Dog is beyond help?
I think-especially-at this time of year-this is an important topic.
Thanks,
Aaron B
