Last night, only 3 days after we left La Cocha, a ver large cougar (judging by the size of his tracks) came down from the mountains and killed 2 calves near the water stream that flows about 1 mile from Ulises's house. One of the calves was quite large, about 200 lbs, the other around 120. After killing them he half-buried them, surely thinking of coming back. Foreman Tomas found the carcasses in the morning.
As winter approaches, cougars have more difficulty in stalking their natural prey, the vizcacha, because the area around their burrows loses the tall grass and makes the unnoticed approach much more difficult; vizcachas are alert and bury themselves fast. As such, cugars are stalking domestic animals more and more.
