Eric, I will give you my opinion and there's 2 other posters here who should add to that (Jerry and Hammer) They are different in terms of training-they mature later and they are more handler sensitive. It's a roll of the dice as to what you'll get-whereas you can go to a breed that has been proven in the "work"-and then you can find bloodlines of proven dogs-well,then your chances of doing well are much better. The work is a big committment, and it's hard to put a lot of work into a dog and just hope that you can get the dog to work.Compare that dog with a proven Mal or other breed out of proven lines and you are at a disadvantage-(at the very least because of the later maturing) My experience with Dogos has been that they are easily bored by the repititive nature of the work.and that they are very sensitive(Except for my Current Numbnutz-"Michael") They are higher in Defense than prey. They are extremely powerful once they have been placed in a position where they feel that they must "fight"-and that's what they do-they fight. The current Dog that I have is the type of dog that bites with the intention of beating you-"the targetting goes out the window". Samson (Sch.III and IPDL) was a little different. So to answer your question- IN MY OPINION: I think that they are excellent for personal protection but they are not as easily trained for Sportwork. Sorry to be so long winded-I hope that I answered your question.
