Regarding Bonnie's question...there is no universal truth on this. The way people hunt depends on LOTS of factors:
1. The dexterity or profficiency of the human hunter himself, which is highly variable.
2. The ability of the hunter to transmit to his dogs what he needs / wants from them.
3. The kind of hunter we are talking of: Weekend hunter, or hard-core, every-day hunter. The way I like to put it: the difference between a hunter than hunts to lose weight, vs another one who does it to gain weight (get food). This in itself makes a huge difference, like comparing amateurs (most of us) to proffesionals (very few).
4. Something very important that few people mention: The individual NEEDS and TASTES of that human hunter and what his expectations are (I will go back to that later, with an example), which can change in time, even if the place being hunted is the same
5. The ability of the dogs to deliver according to the human hunter's needs (performance, "troop supply".
Point 5 depends on 1 and 2, but also on:
a) environment
b) kind of boars being hunted (pure russian vs feral)
c) kind of hunting being done (daytime, night time, on horse, on foot, on truck; following cold trails vs warm ones, etc, etc).
d) Etc.
More later.
