Lou asked me to post this for him. It is 1 of 3 that he has sent me.
Tommy Leonard once said that the mind is the first thing to go. Before that happens to me I would like to share a few of my memories with you. Maybe some other members could send some in to give us a laugh too!
Remember when: NYC PD had greena nd white Club Coupes. Schnectady and Nassau PDs had the same shape and color shoulder patch. Meade shoes were the official shoes in NYC and the store was on Bridge St. Hood brand rubber boots was the best and Greenwall sold them. Endicott and Johnson City, know as the Twin Cities, on Rt. 17. Leather shoes were made here and sold as Endicott Johnson. They were sold in Brooklyn in competition with Thom McCann. When RT. 17 was the only way to get from Long Island to Buffalo, NY. Where Merrick Rd. started a the monument which was in the middle of Hillside Ave. And maybe 166th St. going east, changing to Rt. 27A, Montauk Highway. Route 1, known as theBoston Post Road, and the only way from New York to Florida. Trolley cars from Jamaica to Mineola. The NY Transit System had wooden cars on the el. You could ride outside between the cars. my Father spent 43 years as a motorman on the BMT. TThere was also the IRT. The airplane crashed into the Empire Stae building. The ship, Morro Castle, caught fire off Deal, NJ. Spitting and smoking were the only big crime on the subway. My brother, Joe, driving the experimental tandem bus through the streets of Brooklyn. My first automobile ride at the age of 9 days in a brand new 1926 Buick. Don't remember it, but it happened. The first car I drove was a '28 Chevy. The throttle and spark levers were on the steering wheel around the horn. Running boards with the gate to hold luggage. Spare tires on rear of steamer like trunk on rear. Thermometer (Motometer) on top of radiator acting as a gauge and hood ornament.
Note: Thank you Lou. More to follow.
