Lou~~You mentioned Chocolate Egg Creams. 2 summers ago, we had my wifes two granddaughters (13 &15) at our home for a week. They're from Lancaster, PA all their lives. During a lull in things to keep teenage girls busy, I mentioned to them if they'd like an Egg Cream. Of course the faces turned to disgust
when the words 'Egg' & 'MILK' was mentioned. I explained what they really were, Chocolate syrup( not any type but U-BET is a MUST), cold milk & seltzer. This was not going over too big, so I said I'd make one and see if it meets the 'Princesses approval.'
First the Secret Ingredient,U-Bet Syrup, then the COLD whole milk and then the SELTZER, was to be poured. BUT I explained , not just poured but 'KERPLUNCKED' into the glass.
Well, these hick kids never heard the word KERPLUNK. Again, faces
were made and I think they thought their Step-Granddad was a bit weird.
In went the bubble water, KERPLUNCKED of course, and then, PRESTO, instant foaming . Then came the taste test. Well a few sips and there were two converts in the kitchen.
Their mom in PA had to call us after the kids got home and said the 1st words out of them wes, "Mom, grandpad KERPLUNCKED us Chocolate Egg Creames and you have to get U-BET !!!!
So a little bit of Brooklyn is now in Lancaster , PA.
PS~~the makings of Egg Creams was sent to me by Don C many years ago and I'm still making them. Even my Bride
from Uniondale, LI (she never heard of them either, until I came into the picture in 2003) is a devoted fan of them.
