I saw in the Daily News site that there are two guys starting up a soda business in the Bronx. It is called Bronx Pop and is bottled in glass. They hope to bring back the old fashioned flavor of the old days.
That got me to thinking about those days. Bottled soda sitting in a candy sore coke cooler with blocks of ice. My favorite in Queens was Mission Beverage. They had soda flavors that really exercised the taste buds. Strong orange, grape, pineappble, cream, lemon lime, sasparilla etc. Available in most candy stores, they also did home delivery in larger bottles. I remember, too, the soda home delivery trucks that would bring Schneiders or Hoffman brands to your door in a wooden crate. Pressurized seltzer was also to be had in the clear or blue bottles with the metal siphon on top. It was so convenient to have it delivered. But, as time went by and we let the criminals take over the streets, home deliveries involving cash disappeared.
On a hot, lazy, hazy summer day, a Mission grape soda and a fresh salt pretzel from Meyers candy store on Fresh Pond Rd. was a royal treat for me. Best enjoyed sitting on da stoop, with friends, under the awning, reading comic books. Not a care in the world!! Gentler days.
