Wow...With all the heat and rain of the summer, I looked out the other day to the first of the early leaves on the ground...and, each day now, a little more.
It's still warm, it's still rainy, and I still have gobs of tomatoes ripening in the garden, but, no mistake about it...Fall is close, with winter not far behind.
As a kid growing up in Queens, Fall was the time of the year to burn leaves...I can almost still smell it...and to cook potatoes in the leaf fires...what a treat...we all walked around with salt shakers in our pockets, and nothing tasted beyer then a roasted spud right out of the fire.
I wonder if they still do that....
It was also the time of year when the Jelly Apples appeared in the candy stores...another sure sign of the changing season.
